Healing Through Horses and Faith

About Us

At Smith's Equine Connections, we believe that true healing addresses the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. We offer a Christ-centered environment where individuals are welcomed with compassion, free from judgment or pressure. While biblical principles and prayer are available for those who desire them, we honor each person's healing journey and encourage trauma-informed care alongside faith-based support.

Healing is rarely instantaneous, but we believe that with God's grace, supportive relationships, and the unique partnership between humans and horses, restoration is possible. As Jeremiah 30:17 says:

"But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds," declares the Lord.

This approach acknowledges both the spiritual and psychological aspects of trauma, emphasizing that faith and evidence-based care can work together rather than being in competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at smithsequineconnections@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Trauma can leave us feeling unsafe, broken, ashamed, or alone. While faith doesn't erase what happened, it can provide a foundation for healing by reminding us that our identity is not defined by our wounds, but by God's love and purpose for our lives.

Christian faith supports trauma healing in several ways:

  • God offers hope when trauma steals it. Scripture reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God is near. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).
  • Faith helps restore identity. Trauma often changes how we see ourselves. Through Christ, we are reminded that we are loved, valued, and created with purpose—not defined by the pain we've experienced.
  • Forgiveness is a journey, not a requirement for healing. Forgiveness is often misunderstood. It does not excuse abuse or require reconciliation with someone who has harmed you. Instead, it can become part of releasing the burden of bitterness when you are ready, through God's strength.
  • Prayer provides a safe place to process emotions. God welcomes honesty. Throughout the Psalms, we see people expressing fear, anger, grief, confusion, and hope. Faith encourages us to bring every emotion before Him.
  • Healing happens in community. God designed us for relationship. Safe, supportive people—including counselors, mentors, pastors, and trusted friends—can play an important role in recovery.
  • God works through many forms of healing. Seeking therapy, medical care, or trauma-informed support is not a lack of faith. These resources can be viewed as gifts God uses to bring healing and restoration.

Horses have a unique ability to reflect our emotions without judgment. They respond honestly to our body language, energy, and emotional state, helping us become more aware of ourselves in the present moment.

Within a Christian equine therapy setting, horses can help participants:

  • Learn to trust again.
  • Practice healthy boundaries.
  • Build confidence and emotional regulation.
  • Experience peace and God's creation in a calming environment.
  • Reflect on biblical principles such as gentleness, patience, courage, stewardship, and unconditional love.

Many participants find that quiet moments with a horse create space to hear God's voice more clearly, process difficult emotions, and experience His presence in a way that feels tangible.

 Key Mental Health Benefits:

  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Horses' calming presence lowers cortisol (stress hormone), heart rate, and blood pressure, while increasing endorphins, offering physiological relief.
  • Boosts Self Esteem and Confidence: Developing a bond and learning to handle a large animal fosters personal growth, independence, and self-efficacy.
  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Horses react to emotions, providing real-time, honest feedback, which helps individuals identify patterns and practice managing feelings.
  • Enhances Communication and Social Skills: Non-verbal cues and understanding the horse's needs improve empathy, assertiveness, and social awareness.
  • Provides Grounding and Mindfulness: Focusing on the horse's presence and tasks like grooming encourages mindfulness, bringing clients out of negative thought spirals.
  • Builds Trust and Vulnerability: Overcoming barriers to trust with an animal can translate to better relationships with humans, especially for trauma survivors.
  • Develops Coping and Problem-Solving: Working through challenges with horses teaches patience, responsibility, and healthier ways to deal with problems.

Yes, equine therapy horses are specifically chosen and trained to be exceptionally patient, gentle, and non-judgmental, possessing calm temperaments and high tolerance for people, making them ideal, honest partners that mirror human emotions to facilitate healing, trust, and self-awareness. They are like big, gentle, honest mirrors, reflecting your feelings without criticism, which helps people build confidence and form unique bonds.

 Key benefits for stress management

  • Reduces cortisol (stress hormone) and increases oxytocin (bonding hormone).
  • Develops emotional regulation and self-awareness.
  • Teaches healthy boundaries and trust.
  • Provides an escape in a natural setting, improving mood.

No, you don't need a formal diagnosis or severe trauma to use equine therapy; it's helpful for a wide range of challenges like stress, grief, low self-esteem, and general emotional regulation, though it's also very effective for diagnosed conditions like PTSD, anxiety, depression, and ADHD, working alongside other therapies. It benefits anyone seeking to build skills, improve self-awareness, or find new ways to connect, not just those with significant disorders.

Currently, we do not travel to other barns. However, if there is a demand for our services, we can connect and see options?

It’s important to distinguish between Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) and Equine-Facilitated Learning (EFL) as each serves distinct purposes, utilizes different methodologies, and targets varied outcomes. Knowing the differences can help clients, practitioners, and organizations choose the appropriate approach based on their specific needs and goals.
